The Girl Next Door – Meher Bhutani

‘In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.’ – Coco Chanel

In conversation with Meher Bhutani

She’s the girl next door. Meher is someone who you’ll mistake for ordinary. But watch out because she knows her pouts better than you do and she knows her way.  There’s nothing like a girl who knows what she wants and just knows how to get it.

She’s nineteen, pursuing her Fashion Marketing and Management from Raffles Millennium International, New Delhi.

Meher, how did blogging happen? To put it formally, when did you realize that it is your thing?

“Blogging for me started purely for fun. It was just exciting to open my instagram and see all these people carry these stunning outfits and always felt that yeah, I could be one of them someday. I was very hesitant to start the blog because obviously when you start something new you want it to work and you want to be successful.

Then I started reading about all these bloggers and how some of them left their already ‘very successful’ careers to do this and now I feel that maybe I could make this into a professional career once I’m done with my undergraduate degree too. There is this blog called ‘Love and Other Bugs’, I think they have inspired me to do what I do today more than anybody else.”

“Since I’m still in college, I don’t get much time to work on the blog but I try to be as regular as I can. Even if I don’t post a new outfit, I’m always posting pictures on Instagram about something or the other and it genuinely gives me so much satisfaction to be doing what I am today.”

Instagaram’s a wonderful place. People mature over time. It reflects in their timeline. Tell us about your early post.

“When I started my blog, I had actually only posted a single outfit around this new neckpiece that I had bought and that outfit literally changed everything for me. I got instagram followers, likes, comments with people telling me how much they like the outfit and how I should start my own blog and that’s when I made up my mind that I can start doing it as a part time thing until I graduate.”

Girl Almighty is unique in sense, did it just happen or you had a meticulous thought?

“The name Girl Almighty just came to me. I’m a firm believer that you make your own place in this world and that’s exactly what I’m doing. This blog is like my baby, it’s almost everything I’ve always wanted and it makes me so proud to be able to see people actually follow what I do and appreciate it.”

According to you what is the best fashion trend which you’d like to carry? We all have our trunk of dearly possession. What’s yours?

“I think the one fashion trend that I would never want to get rid of is fringe. It has just been so well accepted this season. I can literally carry my fringe bag with anything and everything I wear. Or I try to anyway.”

Where do people find you, in this endless web of names?

“You can find me on blogspot, twitter, instagram by the following names. I’d love to welcome new followers after doing this post. (Smirks)”

“Also all credits to my photographer, Sneha Chandra, she is my better half when it comes to the blog.”

How would your describe your style?

“My style has to be comfortable chic. You could be wearing the best of the best clothes from the most amazing and expensive brands/designers but if you’re not comfortable, you cannot carry it well. I mostly try to do 2-3 outfits in a single post in different ways so that my followers can see every aspect of that one piece of clothing.”

Do you have any wardrobe ideals?

“One specific person or brand or season does not inspire my wardrobe. I am always on the lookout for something new and fresh to add to this already overflowing wardrobe of mine.”

There are many amazing fashion bloggers we’ve known. Who are your favorites?

“My favorite Indian blogs have to be ‘Shereen, Kayaan and Trishala of Love and Other Bugs’, ‘Zoya and Zina Singh of Terrible Two’s’, ‘Santoshi Shetty of The Style Edge’, ‘Aakriti Rana of La Chica Loca’ and ‘Aashna Shroff of The Snob Journal’. They all have their own unique sense of style and they always inspire me.

Internationally, I love Sazan Barzani and Tamara Kalinic of The Glam and Glitter. They are always so elegant and poised, no matter what they wear.”

Any advice for anyone who wants to start his/her own blog?

“Be ready to be ransacked, tired and broke for at least the first few months of your blogging experience. It’s really not as easy as it looks. A lot of time and money is invested when you’re building a blog. It’s not something everyone can commit to. But I can also assure you that if you really want to do it, no other profession or work can give you the same happiness or satisfaction.”

What are the best aspects of running your own blog? What are the hard aspects?

“The best aspect about running your own blog is definitely that you are your own boss. And you also get to play dress up all the time. I mean who wouldn’t like that! The hardest has to be the time that needs to be invested. You have to be very choosy about your outfits and what you post. It is extremely time consuming.”

So now that we know you well, there’s a short rapid fire round awaiting. Are you excited?

“Well yes I am.”

Your shopping mecca is at?

“My favourite places to shop have to be Forever 21, Forever New, VeroModa, Zara, Koovs. I’m an absolute addict when it comes to online shopping.”

Trending styles this season.

“My favorite has to be the denim craze this season. Also the off-shoulder tops have been a huge success.”

Eternal clothing be like…

“A pair of white/dark blue jeans and tan wedge heels is timeless for sure. And of course, our very own white shirt can never go out of fashion.”

Top designers in your list?

Dhruv Kapoor, Kanika Goyal, Pallavi Mohan, Hemant and Nandita, Gauri and Nainika are taking the world by storm and I absolutely adore their work. I was also fortunate enough to have seen Pallavi Mohan and Hemant and Nandita’s fashion show at All India Fashion Week and it was such an amazing experience.”

What does a blogger do off guard?

Apart from blogging since, I’m still studying; blogging is secondary for me at the moment. I have to first finish my degree before I pursue blogging as a full-fledged career choice.
