The recent attack at Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France, where 84 people were deliberately crushed under a 19-tonne lorry raises some serious questions in our minds. The culprit Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was killed in a tiff with the policemen right after he plunged the lorry into the crowd who had gathered there to celebrate Bastille Day.
Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel’s psychiatrist says that the he exhibited ‘violent behaviour’. According to recent investigations, the attacker used dating sites to pick up men and women and his phone was full of pictures and videos of men and women he has slept with. He surfed websites showing violent videos and pictures of executions. He was not on any terrorist watch list with no proven links and apparently looks like someone who got radicalised pretty quickly. This makes us question the kind of information we are feeding on on the internet and how easily can we be swayed with matters of faith.
Attacks like these are breeding more and more hate. The increasing frequency of such attacks makes it harder for us to keep humanity and compassion alive. At the same time, this shouldn’t stop us from being all that. It is only our sanity which will get us through this era of ( what Chuck Palahniuk says) spiritual depression.
Here are some shocking pictures of the attack.
